The Origins
As far back as January 2006 Tax Deductible’s writing team, Reverend Lewis Ironside and Captain Chris Snelson (both legal titles), had plans for the Absinthe Monologues. Unfortunately those plans only extended as far as the name of the show.
As difficult conceptions go this one was a year-long struggle with stirrups, forceps and not so much as an epidural in sight. Absinthe went from being a light-hearted, non-linear look at the effects of binge drinking and partying to a surrealist sketch show within a play featuring an entire gaggle of Cads.
Determined to create a sketch show with a wholly original feel and format, Chris and Lewis eventually came round to the idea of creating a sinister, near-the-knuckle, part animated, sketch show compéred by a Music Hall style chairman. With the addition of brilliant new writing partner, Dillan Rankin BA(strd), and talented animator, George Dodgson, things quickly took shape.
Drawing cult favourite characters from The Finger Puppet Autopsies and adding a whole wheelie-bin full of specially written material and freaks, The Absinthe Monologues looks set to seriously push the expectations for what a fringe comedy can achieve.
Love, the writers.
